October 9, 2009: LCROSS impact from Montebello OSP

Rich Neuschaefer

The observing conditions at the Montebello OS parking lot were outstanding, clear skies and excellent seeing. I took my AP 155EDFS (155mm f/7 APO) to try to see some sign of the impact. Rogelio was imaging the moon to try and catch impact. No one else up there.

I didn't see any sign of the impact. Several minutes after the predicted time of impact I looked along the terminator. Beautiful detail at 310x (7mm Pentax SMC-XL and TV 2x Barlow). It was fun to see Hadley Rill it was very well defined.

It was easy to see 6 stars in the Trepezium. The last object was Mars. It was showing a polar cap but I had didn't make out other detail. OTOH, I was not taking a really careful look. I wanted to get packed and head home.
