Pentti Kanerva

This was a star-party night of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District--the good people who let us use the site--with Jack Zirker as the resident MPROSD astronomer. The sky was clear, air relatively steady, midnight temperature 65F (18C, 291K), no wind, no dew, no coyotes, 2 mosquitoes. Three of us TACies/TACos(?) showed up with scopes: Jeff Weiss for imaging--our visitors could see images appear on the laptop screen--Mike Markert with an 8" Cassegrain reflector and a 4"(?) refractor, and I with a 5" Mak.

The ranger came an hour after sunset and checked our permit. We had a dozen or so visitors, some beginners, some quite knowledgeable of astronomy (one astronomy major), some in between, all very interested in what we could see in the scopes: Jupiter with three moons, Dumbbell Nebula, Ring Nebula, the Double Cluster, the Double-Double, the Hercules Globular, Andromeda Galaxy, Pleiades, all such. Lots of discussion on what we saw, lots of questions to Jack.

Very good night overall. Jeff even accomplished some serious imaging. I nearly hit a deer on the way down.
