That eclipse last week

Jamie Dillon

Just want to add in that it was teasingly visible from Salinas. We'd given up on it, our sky being all socked in with dense high haze. My buddy Chris Spurrell called right at maximum, at 7 pm, to ask what we were seeing. From Hawthorne, right near LAX, he had a grand view, the bugger. Looking east, we could see a little tentative streak of light where the Moon was. Then two things happened. The sky to the East cleared up a little, Regulus and Saturn started to poke thru. And Spurrell suggested trying the binocs. Doh!

Thru binocs, after the clouds had cleared a bit, by 7:20, still near maximum umbra fu, there was the Moon all brown and russet-colored, with some of that killer 3D effect. Not long after the clouds built up and it got pretty impressionistic, but all 3 of us at home were glad to see some of the event. Good for Spurrell for being the smart one.

Late report but sincere,

DDK
