It's summer again!

by Jeff Gortatowski

Last night was quite warm. Hazy. Dead calm here in Fullerton CA (33N 117W) (Think area of Disneyland). Cool down of my 18cm reflector is not generally an issue. I had it out on an EQ platform. Jupiter was outstanding with the 6mm Nagler Zoom (168x) and at times even at 5mm and 4mm (201x and 252x respectively). At 4mm the seeing and haze played in as there was some CA on the limbs. At 9:30pm (4:30UT) the GRS had rotated into view. Io and its shadowed were transiting. The view was great. Jet black shadow of Io. Currently the GRS is sitting sort of up on a wave of the SEB with nothing in front and this wave of the SEB in the back. Or that is how I recall it. I did not sketch it (I suck at drawing). It made it look like the GRS was surfing the SEB. The SEB itself, right after the GRS (don't know if that is west or east, but 'following' works) itself looked oval. Don't know if the was junior or not. The NEB was scaloped along its southern edge with dark spots and there were 2 or 3 dark festoons connecting to the SEB. Of course once Io got with 5 or 10 minutes of the edge it became a disinct yellowish goldish orangeish ball in 3D over the NEB. Quite a view. Showed my wife and she picked on the GRS by herself and shes not looked more than a few times. The Teleport is amazing.
