Palomar 11

by Carter Scholz

I was poking around in Oph for GCs from the backyard last night with the 12.5". It was a good night for Berkeley, ZLM about 5.0, the main 7 stars visible in UMa. I didn't look for 6293 last night, but have "got" it in these skies in 8", though surely not seen it as you have. I'd go out right now for a try, but the fog is in. Last night I saw, or perhaps detected is the better word, 6426. "Haze stayed still," I like that. Definitely there, though nothing resolved. "Haze might have been there" for the nearby galaxy 6384. After a long time looking, resolving faint field stars, a bit of smudge came and went, turned out to be elongated in the right direction. Mag 10.6, so I think it's not impossible -- ?

I'll take a long look at 6293 from darker skies, Calstar for sure. Thanks for the reminder. I'm trying to take less of a "hit and run" checklist approach. I always learn something new when I revisit stuff I think I've "seen". I went out last night merely to revisit M10, M12, M14, but got sidetracked by the good transparency, and by the time I'd finished poking, the big guys were all behind the roof.
