Holmes, holmes on the range

Heather Steingreubl

Wandered outside a little after 10pm with my little 8x21 birding binoculars to try to convince myself that it really wasn't too late to take out the scope. Holmes looked all fuzzy, so I got out the scope.

It was good to read that I wasn't just imagining the donut effect I was seeing. It seemed right because it was more pronounced at higher mag. But, with the Caltrain station and SJC both throwing up waves of heat and whatever else between me and the sky, I wasn't sure if I could rely on my observation. Mark's details on the size of it as compared to last night strikes me as right on. In addition, I was seeing some slight fanning in the center which was an added feature for me over last night.

The bright spot seemed brighter to me tonight, but it also seemed to wobble. Is this just my seeing conditions? It doesn't seem reasonable that it could be moving in what seemed like a fairly regular figure 8 pattern, so I'm chalking this up to operator error unless someone else pipes up having seen something similar.

Bedtime.

Heather
