OR Fremont Peak 1/13 (Sat)

by Bob Jardine

Those who wussed out and didn't go out to observe last night due to the predictions of extreme cold managed to make the right decision for the wrong reason, at least as far as Fremont Peak is concerned. It wasn't really cold at all -- maybe a good inversion. No wind helped. It was beautiful -- at first. But by 8:00, clouds had rolled in, and it was sucker holes until 10:00, when I packed up and left. Oh, yeah, at least the seeing sucked.

I did manage to track down and observe one astronomical object at around 7:00, before it crudded up:

IC 2149 -- PN, Aur -- a nice little Planetary, very easy to locate near Beta and Pi Aurigae; medium bright, quite small, high surface brightness, round, hint of blue-green color; no detail seen.

Oh, yeah, and I saw a couple of shooters.

I hope my scope sacrifice made it clear up for the others who stayed later. But I decided to cut my losses and try again tonight.

Bob J.
