Conditions at the Peak Monday Night

by Peter Natscher

Bob and I observed Œtil midnight. At 11 pm, the temp. was 31°F at 55 RH, no breeze, conditions quite ok for us to observe in. At 8:00 pm, the skyıs threshold mag. was 6.4 overhead in Andromeda with 1.5 arc-sec star bloating overhead because of the jetstream. I was able to log, describe, and sketch 8 more HIIıs, but not as many as I wanted to. I was definitely in the s-l-o-w mode last night because of the long day at work I had previously, along with the ton of clothing I was wearing and low temp. It was real good to be out in the winter sky!

I planned on seeing the Space Station flyby at 5:50 pm and it was a few minutes early out of the SW and passing very high at 80° overhead. I was able to hand track my 18² Starmaster on the Space Station from its initial SW sky location right on to its ³overhead² passing and still stayed with it as it disappeared in the earthıs shadow in the NE. The Space Station was really hauling in my eyepiece view (27mm Panoptic). My view of it was detailed enough for me to see plenty of white-colored structure along with its new orange-colored solar array. I didnıt notice the STS that is hooked up to it, though.
