Why Messier made a list

by Andrew Pierce

I was trying to see the various parts of Schwassman Wachmann on Saturday with 15 x 70 binos. There was nothing visible in the part of Lyra where I expected to see the main part so I scouted around. Soon enough I saw a roundish glow that looked bright enough to be part of the comet, so I set up a telescope to look at the same area. I couldn't find the object again with the binos at first. I was worried that maybe I had seen M13 instead so I searched it out. I was relieved to see the star field was different. I eventually located the original glow and tried to pinpoint its location with the binos to aim the scope at the same spot. The location seemed all too familiar, in eastern Hercules. I pointed the binos at M92s location and sure enough that was my "comet".

It would be nice to have a list of things that look like comets in the 15x70s, wouldn't it?
