Elusive Green Flash Seen Over the Pacific

by Thomas Taylor

A spectacular 'Green Flash' over the Pacific was observed at sunset on Presidents Day as the sun dipped below the horizon.

Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Specifically 37.0639N, 122.3026W

For many observers who had only thought that they had previously seen the elusive phenomena, Mondays event held no ambiguity for the sun turned a brilliant green for about a full second or two before it finally sank into the Pacific.

The Green Flash is an optical phenomena caused by atmospheric dispersion near the horizon. See http://www.mintaka.sdsu.edu/GF/explain/explain.html for further information and links.
