A very short night

by Dennis Beckley

Around 9:00 tonight I hauled my 10 x 70 binoculars and my little Orion 10 inch dob out on my front driveway in Benicia to catch the close pairing of Venus and Mercury in the western twilight.

I had just gotten set up when two of my wife's girlfriends, who had been over working on a dance routine, stepped out to head home. Neither of them had ever looked through a telescope before and I asked them if they wanted to look at the planets before they left.

The sound of their heartfelt excitment as they really saw Venus and phased Mercury for the first time made me feel like I was it was me also seeing them for the first time.

I also showed them Jupiter overhead with all four moons visible and beautiful bands and finished up with the "double-double" high up in the East.

As they left I felt like I might have made two more converts to the beauty of astronomy and it made me look forward to the upcoming "public night" at Shingletown.
