A word from DanUnder

by John Gleason

I must say it is good to be back in the sunburnt land. Few people, clear skies, and a broad expanse of Milky Way will put a tear into this traveler's eye every time. Naturally upon this American's arrival with a 747 load of astronomical goodies, I contributed to ending the drought conditions by providing a few mm's of much needed rain. I hear that John Howard will be presenting me with a plaque in my honor and the Coonabarabran Shire counsel is planning a big celebration!

Patience pays off however, (along with a repetitive dose of Yo Yo Ma playing the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly in the observatory) - the endless nights of cloud and mist have past into a deep blue sky and warm weather. Looks like a stretch of 10 clear nights ahead and last night was no exception with an electric Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon. My imaging systems have begun sucking down southern celestial photons into the STL11K like some massive black hole. There won't be a hydrogen alpha nebula untouched when I'm finished
