SF Sunset Dec 16/17

by Michael Linnolt

Great observing weather continues! But a chilly NE wind last night made it a bit uncomfortable. Seeing appeared about normal, with E/F components of trapezium visible when it steadies down. Q2/Machholz about the same as last night, with a barely detectable tail in the NW direction. Im sure if it was higher elevation it would look a lot better to clear the airmass and light pollution better. Did 4 AAVSO cataclysmic variables:

U GEMThe one the RXTE team is watching for their TOO campaign. Still quiescent <14.0
RX ANDOne of the better known CV, which outburst bright enough for anyone to see in a small scope. Currently in a weak outburst at 12.2
CN ORIAnother classic CV, with pretty regular outbursts, now fading at 13.6
V1159 ORIA very fascinating CV that has highly irregular and frequent outbursts, in fact it appears to be at a different brightness every night! Currently at 13.8, it varies from 12 to 15.

For those unfamiliar with variable stars, I recommend you check the AAVSO website - www.aavso.org for all the information you can imagine on this fascinating subject. In fact, it is one of the areas of astronomy where amateurs can still play an important role in research. The AAVSO, under the late Dr. Janet Mattei, is a pioneer in amateur-professional collaborations. Many AAVSO observers (including myself) have gotten publications based on our contributions. If you get tired of "just looking" take some moments to check them out and participate in research!
