Fremont Peak, 2004-09-11/12

by Jeff Crilly

Mark, Marek, Jamie, et al, already covered the nice conditions at fremont peak last saturday, so I wont dwell on that. I too was up at the pads (thanks for the spot, marek).

I spent the evening 1) futzing with the st7e trying to get the laptop talking to it, 2) doing some long exposures on ngc7k area and ngc1499, and 3) looking at stuff Marek was finding in the 15" (oh.. and also looking at an occasional object in the 30".)

Speaking of the 30.. ngc7331 and friends, in addition to stephans quintet, looked very pleasant, though it required a bit of contortions to get my eye to the eyepiece given the OTA was almost straight up.

The 15 was offering pretty much the usual eye candy of the night... Veil w/ the Oiii, ngc891, etc. Quite pleasing.

The camera eventually started working and I managed to get some long film exposures of the NGC7000 (I have previous exposures of this area, but the stars have huge blue halos). As a bonus there was time for 30minutes on NGC1499.

Anyhow these are encouraging (for film), but more work is required.. it was a bit windy, which could account for some oblong stars. (Or polar alignment was off, or there was some flex, etc.)
