Fremont Peak 6/12/2004

by Richard Crisp

Last night I was up in the workshop area near the restrooms on the way up the hill toward the observatory/pads area at Fremont Peak. With a few trees and a couple of small buildings nearby, it offered a bit of protection from the wind; trading off access to the northern sky for wind protection. Turns out to have been a good tradeoff.

Jeff Crilly and John Gleason also set up in that area, which we dubbed the "imager's ghetto".

James Turley, Marek Chichanski, and Bob Czerwinski also showed up with James and Marek using the pads by the observatory and Bob keeping a close eye on we imagers to make sure we weren't having too much fun. But really Bob was there to do some serious observing which I understand included FINISHING HIS HERSCHELL 2500 LIST. He told me that was a five year project. CONGRATULATIONS BOB!!

The weather was warmer and clearer than on Friday night and the winds initially were lighter too. However they did pick up as the evening passed.

I was imaging with my widefield setup, choosing the parent nebula of vdB142, IC1396 as my quarry for the evening.

Using [SII], Ha and [OIII] I shot the area as a 2 x 1 mosaic. Even with the comparatively wide field of the FCT-76/ST10XME (~350mm focal lenght), the 2 x 1 mosaic didn't quite catch the full extent of this very busy nebular region.

The nights this time of year are short, and I could have used an extra two hours of dark. But I had to make do with the time I had available so this is what I was able to capture last night.

Perhaps while this object is up this season I can add to it.
