Was it a zoo?

by Rich Neuschaefer

Lick Observatory was having a concert night. Lots of people. The Lick volunteers were outside with their amateur telescopes. I was using my AP180mm f/9 EDT. Near midnight I started using the binoviewer. With the barlow and corrector in the binoviewer, the 16mm Zeiss eyepieces should have been giving about 400x but the image seemed like it is smaller than I would expect for 400x.

It was easy to see Solus Lacus, Mare Sirenum and the other dark features closer to the polar ice cap.
