It's a planet night

by Morris Jones

It's one of those great hazy clear nights that are perfect for planet gazing.

With Saturn near transit, I was seeing hints of radial density differences in the rings, but not so much on the inner edge of the B ring where I expect them, but out from Cassini. The Encke feature was just barreling in, unmistakable.

On Jupiter we caught the last ten minutes of an Io transit. It was beautiful seeing the bright moon against the limb darkening as it emerged from transit.

In addition, the SEB was showing a sequence of white ovals trailing behind the red spot hollow which was close to the limb. The ovals seem to be north of the spot hollow, closer to the equator, and form a nice trail decreasing in size. Slightly east of the meridian they kind of vanished off to a point.
