Leonids at Saratoga High School

by James Turley

The Saratoga High School Astronomy/Physics/Chem teacher, EJ Lux, invited his students and their parents to the Football Field. My daughter is in his Chem class, hoping to get extra credit for attending (which she didn't get).

About 30 students and a few parents showed up. Conditions were clear, but the East was outstanding. The show began at 2:15 am for us, lasting to about 3:30. My son was thrilled to see a blue streak hit Jupiter square on, and vanish. What a collision, complete with lingering smoke!

The best display was at about 2:40 am, radiating out of Leo just on schedule. My kid said he felt like he was driving Earth like a race car with bugs hitting his windshield. Exactly.
