Leonids Display from Alice Springs

by Jane Houston Jones

Actually from Bond Springs Outback Retreat 30 km north of Alice Springs. We had a group from the Alice Springs Astronomical Society join the Leonid Multi-Instrument Aircraft Campaign outpost on Australia, where we counted Leonids and sporadics and ran two camcorders with image intensified lenses all night Saturday and Sunday nights. Our ZHR rates were 2000 at about 3:15 p.m. local time. Our other locations were airborne aboard the Fista out of Edwards Air Force Base, another group at Mt. Lemmon in Arizona and yet another at Fremont Peak State Park in California. Here in Sydney, we had dinner with friends in the ASNSW and showed them our results, and heard about their travels to get away from the weather. Quite a storm here with torrential rain and winds. Home tomorrow. What a trip!
