Pictures from last Saturday night (6/16/2001) of scope and Mars

by Jeffrey D. Gortatowsky

Last Saturday I had a pleasant night at the Orange County Astronomer's site out near Palomar Mountain. My goal was to learn to setup, align, and use an Astro-Physics 900GTO mount and also to try a new Universal Astronomics UniMount. I wanted to give both a workout. (Un)fortunately I let observing get in the way and did not accomplish all the tests I wanted to.

Of course Mars was the night's main observing topic in the 130EDT while the Scorpius region of the Milky Way was my main target for the Fujinon 16x70 binoculars.

As usual I enjoyed going around and seeing other's equipment and took some photos of them. I took quite a few handheld a-focal images of Mars using a Nikon CP950 on Shutter Priority (1/30th to 1/4th second exposures). Unfortunately, as you'll see, most are fairly crappy. Seeing was fair for Anza, I notched Zeta Bootis (~.8") and easily split Xi Ursa Majoris (~1.7"). It's was fun seeing the "Peanut" shaped diffraction ring around Zeta's two components. However these doubles were higher overhead than Mars which according to Starry Night Pro was roughly 28* above the horizon. Most of the best images were taken using a 1.8x Televue barlow and a 4.8mm Nagler.

So without further gibberish:
