Christmas Eve Seeing Conditions

by Phil Chambers

I was just out with the Nexstar 5 for about an hour and a half. Seeing was neither terrible nor great. Not a lot of detail on Jupiter, averted imagination showed the E star in the trapez. (I am not really sure but it seemed to be there for a fleeting moment a time or two). M42 is always worth some time. I could see Rigels dim companion without much trouble and Saturn showed the Cassini div pretty readily but not steadily.

In fact the seeing was changing in a wave that had a period of about 3 cycles per sec like someone was playing with the focus knob. Temps in the mid 40s and humidity in the mid 60s. Nice night with just light pants and a sweatshirt.

The planets and Orion are placed well for my front yard although that is about the limit of what I could see. Saturn was disappearing into the Ash Tree asterism (no leaves) when I came in.

I could see diffraction rings around stars with a 12.5 uo ortho and a 9mm vixen lanth. That is 100x and 140x or so. I tried a 6 but that was too much. The 9mm was giving good views. The scope got zero cool down time but it came from my truck which is parked outside.

A short but satisfying evening for a photon starved scope and viewer.

I plan on getting up and checking the conditions for the eclipse in the morning but based on the latest mornings (fog), I doubt success.
