Saturday night report from Coe

by Peter Santangeli

And the winner is.... Coe! At least for me.

After spending Friday night down at LSA (and fighting dew and cold), I headed back to the city Saturday to do a few things around the house.

After reading about the outstanding seeing at Coe, I figured, what the heck, and headed off to Coe for Saturday night.

There was a lot of fog appearing and dissipating over us early on. This lasted for quite a few hours after sunset, prompting about half of the 12 or 14 of us to leave. The rest of us busied ourselves looking at the great planets.

Patience paid off though. By 11:00 or so we were enjoying the best conditions I have ever experienced in the bay area.

The night was quite clear. I'm no expert on this, but other people were debating whether it as a 7 or an 8. The most astounding thing though was the darkeness (for Coe). The entire bay area below us was heavily socked in with a dense fog. Unless you were looking at objects below 15 degrees or so of north or northwest sky, the conditions were quite dark.

The temperature was surprisingly warm - well above zero, and it was actually very dry. By the end of the evening I had turned off my dew heaters and was happily working away without so much as a dew shield.

It was a bit of an astro-geek-fest by the end, with 4 out of the eight of us doing CCD work, and myself doing silver work.

I packed up at about 3 in the morning, making it quite a long and satisfying night.
