Saturday night report from Coe

by Matthew Marcus

So was I the lone visual observer? I suspect I was. Great stuff visible! I got some objects I'd always had lots of trouble with. The Flame was better without a filter than with. Hubble's Variable Nebula was easy. My neighbors wouldn't believe it, but I'm sure I saw the California Nebula with 7x50 binox and a 2" Ultrablock filter. It looked like a fuzzy streak at exactly the position, orientation and size it was supposed to be, between xi and epsilon (I think - working from memory) Persei, and with its long axis perpendicular to that line.

I finally got the Bubble Nebula in Cas. Too bad Pegasus was dropping into the West by the time it was getting really good - I might have been able to get the brightest one of Stefan's Quintet. Oh, well, next time.

By morning, I was working Leo galaxies, old friends I hadn't seen in many months. This continued well past the time it started to get bright in the East.

I had started a Messier survey at just the wrong time, just after the Virgo galaxies were leaving, so I was glad for the chance to get a few more M-objects properly logged. I've done it before, but this will be the first time it's been logged with anything like sufficient data for it to count (no recount jokes, please!).
