Short Observing Report

by Bill Feiereisen

There's something very special about astronomy and camping. Annette and I just got back from 40 degrees, 23.296' N; 119 degrees, 14.394'W in the Kumiva Valley, where we spent a week camping; reading and hiking during the day and observing at night. Desert nights at altitude are wonderful and I spent many hours visiting my old friends. One night I left everything set up and got up at 2:30a to tour the winter sky. Not only is it great to see Orion again, but Jupiter and Saturn are coming around and are prominent late in the evening and during the night. Now if we could just do without sleep everything would be perfect.
