Comet from Del Valle...

by Julius Szakacs

I saw the comet from Del Valle. We set-up (me and my wife) at the service entrance road around 10pm. I used my 8" f6.3 Meade SCT. I found it very quickly, after locating it in my 11x70 Pro-optic bino. It was about 8 deg, below the lower last star of the Big Dipper, almost straight down toward the horizon. The 8" SCT showed the comet very bright, with a long tale. I tried the Sky-glow filter, but it made it worse. Tale faded away.

Later in the evening, as the sky moved lower in to the NE light pollution, it was harder to make out the tale, but the head was still bright.

Two or three groups of people were behind the gate with dobs 8" or 10" size. As they were packing up, I asked them about the comet. I was very surprised, they didn't know about it. "What comet"- they responded. So I show them in my scope, also to other people who just parked around me, and having fun.

Del Valle has lot of car traffic, other wise it is quite dark toward west and south. Milky way showed very clear. There is a light dome to North-east, from the cities of Pleasanton and Livermore, above the hills.

I clocked a few more M-objects in Scorpio and Teapot, than we headed home after midnight.

The weather was warm and the sky was clear, no wind at all. I was in t-shirt all night.

I may go out tomorow again. Let me know if someone wants to join me.
