Observing report from Lake Sonoma

by Robert Leyland

Thanks for posting the report Steve.

I very much enjoyed the peeks at the fainter objects you were finding. They sure are interesting, particularly the double planetary/stellar nebula (described below).

The comet was fabulous, an easy find using the 7x50 finderscope on my 8" Dob. I had last seen the comet on Thursday night, so I had a good idea of both what it looked like, and where it was headed. It did move a long way in just two days, and as we watched, it skated past a star coming very close to fully occulting, initially it seemed as though a piece had split off the comet, then my brain engaged and I realised what was happening :-) Simply fascinating seeing the speed of the comet.

Aside from popping off to look through other peoples scopes :-) I spent most of my time hunting down Uranus and Neptune. Dick Flasck had initiated the search, but his compouter program had provided erroneous information. Sky & Tel had the coorect coordinates, and we we're easily able to find Uranus. In his 17.5: Dob, it was a large disc with greenish blue color. The NexStar show a bluish dot, with little apparent disk. Neptune was more of a challenge, but Dick's telescope provided a great view.

Once again Lake Sonoma provided very nice, dark skies, twice counting 22 stars in region 11, for a 6.1 limiting magnitude. Last time we tried this Bruce Jensen was able to count 10 more stars than my less experienced eyes. So I wouldn't be surprised if the site is darker than my calculations.

The primary difficulty with Lake Sonoma seems to be traffic. The Lone Rock Flat parking/trial area, is just off the road to the campground. It is elevated above most fot he road, so this shouldn't be a problem, except that the road continues up and around a hill. We were periodically swept by headlights as cars/trucks drove by. One idiot had a roof mounted spotlight that he managed to train on us for an extended sweep.

Dave Silva has a setup plan that may ameliorate the problem, and even then, we get plenty of warning of approaching vehicles.

Luckily the campground gates close at 10:30 or 11:00 and traffic dies down after that. There were no further cars after about 11:15.
