Observing at Montebello 12/29/99

by Kurt Kuhlmann

Oh, oh. Now I've been goaded out of simply lurking on TAC. Just some highlights:

I led off with ngc 584/596/600/615 a nice quartet of galaxies within 1/2deg circle in Cetus 615 was difficult but the other 3 in a line showed easily. I dove down to -40 with ngc 55, a very large edge on in Sculptor as it happened to sit SSW in the 'dark hole' of the montebello site. Mottled and overflowing the Meade 14mm UWA field.

Richard Ozer and I got off on some double/triple star tangents with i Cas (2.5" closest), 12 Lyn (2") and sigma Cas (3"). Much easier with the 6" off axis mask as these were bright, colorful stars. I added R Lep to the mix as I believe this is the reddest star in the sky, more so than Hind's crimson to my eye.

Working down in Eridanus, I caught the galaxy pair ngc1332/1325 two nice edge-ons 20' apart each with an easy small companion galaxy like M31's sidekick M32.

I showed off the huge 6' PN ngc1360 with the UHC. Very bright central star and soft oval dimmer in parts like the Owl, though this great object is missing on the Tirion SkyAtlas 2K chart.

Finally I made it down to the Fornax cluster whose brightest members are ngc1365/1380/1399/1374/1379/1404/1427 I could fit 8 of these objects in the 40mm SWA field though I spent much time using the 14mm and 7.4mm Nagler to see details. Just below that grouping is the gorgeous barred spiral 1365, larger in extent (~8' ) with two sweeping arms just barely visible above the glow.

ngc 2022 in orion. Very bright and small with clear blue green appearance. I ended in Puppis with ngc2453/2452 a very nice open cluster with small ring nebula look-alike PN inside it and ngc2467 an EN with loose cluster of stars.

Quite bright dome shape with mottled underside and dark lane beneath.

It was a nice night for me. Thanks for the coffee and company.
