Observing Blowout Friday 5/21 - 5/22 & Shoot The Moon!

by Peggy Bernard

5/21/99 Observing, Tonopah, conditions poor, Moon 1st Quarter, sky glow moderate to severe, moisture content low, temperature warm 60 degrees. 10" DOB.

Note: Conditions improved to EXCELLENT after the Moon set at about 0130 5/22.

Began about 2200 hours 5/21. Wanted to try some Moon photography using my SLR and TTL prime focus. Used "T" adapter. Couldn't get focus (Anybody know why this is?). Focus seemed want to be inside the telescope tube! Tried attaching my 3x barlow. Now focus was out in front and I could easily focus on the film plane. Shot unguided pictures bracketing at 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000, 400ASA. Regulus appeared in several of the shots. It apparently had been occulted by the Moon earlier in the evening.

Began deep sky observing at about 2300 as to get Moon to my back.

Primary Target area Hercules, Ophiuchus, Serpens Caput.

Finished around 0300 hours 5/22 due to fatigue (I needed sleep!)
