5/13/99 Observing FEAST!

by Phil L. Reinders

I agree the seeing was very good last night! I got out the 80mm Vixen Flourite F/8 and got great veiws of mars and venus! Even used the 2.5 mm Lanthium eyepiece successfully. The image was larger but not anymore detailed than the 4mm, may have had problems with the focus. Its tough to get that perfect focus.

Noticed three features on mars not sure what they where. One was a large triangular patch on the right side witch made me stay on the mars for about 1.5 hours trying to get more! I now know what those refractor guys do.

Being in Santa Clara near stevens creek auto row the sky glow is horrible here, and I tried very hard to get any of the Messier objects all without success. Yes I know its only 3" but Jay does it so I thought why not try. Only prblem I have is I can barely see 3 (including Polaris) stars of the little dipper and my star hopping ability is the pits using the field of view of the telescope. It also seemed like there was a little haze/fog/ moisure in the air. I didnt get my 200mm Reflector out perhaps another night!

I got to go to lunch now ! Cant wait for the weekend at the peak!
