Sunday Night "Mooning"

by Peggy Bernard

Gus and I were out for a Moon session tonight, albeit there was a thin cloudy haze in the sky. But none the less, Gus performed admirably.

With the help of Norton's Star Atlas, at 107X I was able to see detail of Tyco. There was an interesting large crater with an arc of 5 smaller craters in the northeast quadrant. I'm not sure if it was Fabricius and Jansen as my map doesn't have sufficient detail. I didn't have the luxury of having Akkana's Moon web page nearby to double check.

Mare Crisium, Foecunditatis and Tranquillitatis were all easily identifiable. Sinus Iridum looked particularly nice. Not being a Moon expert, I was Moon hopping from big stuff I could identify to small unfamiliar objects.

Anyway, the Moon was at or near zenith for these observations. The thin cloud cover acted like sort of a "Moon Filter" and cut the brightness to tolerable levels. It was a fun session as the wind was gone and the air was fairly steady.

Hope I'm not boring you all with these details.....
