More fun with the ST-7
By Mike J. Shade

I am really beginning to like the CCD camera. I was out last night (HUMBUG!!!!) shooting the moon with the 6" AP/Meade 7mm Orthoscopic/SBIG ST-7 CCD camera.

Over the course of about two hours, I captured about 30 images of the moon and 10 or so of Saturn. I have finally figured out a few things with the camera. I set the focus last time with the 4mm eyepiece and made a template to help in achieving focus again. Sure enough, focus was pretty good and only a few minor adjustments were needed to get things into focus. With the zoom capability of the CCD, a lower power was used with the telescope, helping to cut down on the effects of seeing on the image.

I got the exposure right and was able to take a number of images. Some were poor because of seeing but a number were between "ripples" as it were and are pretty sharp. Although I am not a master of image enhancement, I able to bring out additional detail on the computer after a few minutes. I think some of the resulting images are pretty good.

I have not done any deep sky work yet. I'm not sure my Losmandy's drive is up to it but we shall see. When I get the split mirror and color filter wheel...watch out! Now I'm tweaking the New Epson Stylus 700 photo printer to really make the images shine.

If people want copies of images, I would be glad to send them via e-mail (I do not have a web page).
