Observing near the galactic center

by Russell Chmela

The surprising thing about all the posts about this weekend: Few observing reports.

Went to Pacheco SP and set-up at 8:00 pm. Did some adjustments and settled back for dusk to happen. Started into the areas of U2000 charts 339 and 340, and first objects being M20 and 8. It was a very nice evening, shirtsleeve astronomy, what a concept! The light breeze kept the bugs in thier hangars, and no dew of course. The transparency was very good and I found this by the first objects. The Lagoon looks good I thought, but why the three radial spokes from its center? Ooops, it was the Trifid, and very large and detailed. M20 covered a pair of low power fields. The center of M20 made me realize this was a good night for Dark Nebulae, so I concentrated there. Among the many seen B92, 93, Ldn 93, 400,108 and 401. Ran as far north as the m24 starcloud, right to central Scorpius, left to the handle of the teapot and as low as 5 degrees under the pot. As Sagr began to submerge in the west, shifted to Capricornus and did several planetaries there, among them 7009 (Saturn neb.) The moon was only a dull orange crescent, so it did not interfere until up high, so the session ended at 3. A long nap, and a trip back that was uneventful.

Seeing was fair, so only a glimpse of Jupiter and Saturn made. Watched a moon appear from in front of Jupiter around 12:45. Some small meteors seen.

Have a great time @ Lassen!
