Weekend at Plettstone

by Michelle Stone

The weather forecasts were dismal but a single satellite photo showed clear sky over Plettstone so I took off on Wednesday afternoon for a long weekend. I had hoped to get at least two nights of clear sky before the storms came through.

I spent a lot of time tracking down galaxies on my list with the C11. I am learning to appreciate a smaller, longer focal length telescope. In a dark sky, it shows incredible detail in the brighter objects. And I am amazing myself finding so many of these NGC objects in my 192mm refractor.

I was also delightfully supprised when the dreary cloudy skies of Friday afternoon, turned into ver dark, clear skies with exceptional seeing. Saturday.. sameo sameo. I took advantage of every night, played with my toys a bit, and did some wonderful observing.

I got caught up in Canes Venatici. There are some spectacular edge on galaxies up there. In fact, the planned photograpy session gave way to observing when I found these.
