Jupiter Saturday Night
By Sandra Macika

WoW!

Jupiter was gorgeous on Saturday night! I was viewing from Boulder Creek. There were clouds and fog, but somewhere around midnight the skies cleared for about an hour.

When we first started viewing the GRS looked perfect. However, the seeing got worse, and by the time it improved I think the spot had rotated away.

I was very impressed by the two moon shadows. I had seen what I thought were moonshadows before, but I was never quite sure. They probably were not, because they did not look anything like what I saw last night. The shadows last night were much darker than what I had seen before, and the little dots were so sharp and crisp. It was interesting to note that the first (left? top?) moon was much smaller than the second.

The moon that moved in front of the planet was great! I could actually see the moon just as it got in front of the planet! It was very frustrating that just as soon as the moon cleared the edge of the planet the sky fogged over. I think I would have stared all night if I could have kept sight of it. Was it causing the second (bottom? right?) shadow?

Unfortunately the sky had completely fogged over by the time Saturn rose above the treetops. Maybe next time!
